Host Nation Put Five Past Scots In One Sided Affair

Germany thrash Scotland in Euro 2024 opener

Host nation put five past Scots in one-sided affair

Graeme Souness pulls no punches in his assessment of Scotland's performance

Germany got their Euro 2024 campaign off to a flying start with a 5-1 thrashing of Scotland in Munich on Friday night.

The hosts took the lead inside 10 minutes through RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner, and they never looked back.

Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich made it 2-0 just before the half-hour mark, and the Germans were cruising.

Scotland pulled one back through Southampton striker Che Adams early in the second half, but the Germans restored their two-goal advantage through Borussia Dortmund winger Julian Brandt.

Substitute Emre Can added a fourth for Germany with 15 minutes remaining, and Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard completed the scoring in the closing stages.

It was a chastening defeat for Scotland, who were outclassed by a superior German side.

Former Liverpool and Scotland midfielder Graeme Souness, now a pundit for Sky Sports, did not hold back in his criticism of Scotland's performance.

"Scotland were absolutely woeful," Souness said.

"They were outplayed in every department. They were second to every ball, they couldn't string two passes together, and they defended like a pub team."

"Steve Clarke has a lot of work to do if he wants to get Scotland out of this group.
